All of our puppies and adults are given regular de-worming with Nemex 2 and Panacur, DA2PPV Vaccines (6 weeks, 10 weeks and the final at 14 weeks).  The puppies or adults receive their Rabies vaccine here when they are 5 - 6 months of age unless they must travel - law requires that the Rabies vaccine be administered by the age of 12 weeks for any travel done within the United States or abroad.  The 5-6 month time frame is our personal preference, and once we release the puppy to you - it is important to work with your Vet regarding the protocol of vaccines.  Please note that it is important NOT to administer the vaccine strain of Leptospirosis to a dachshund!  Our contract terms state that should the vaccine be administered - it is a breech of the contract, and our guarantee is void!

We proudly feed  a 5 star premium brand of dry dog food which is also AAFCO approved.  We have found after careful research and recommendations from objective surveys that premium dog foods can provide a wide spectrum of the necessary nutrients, and vitamins that a dog requires, and that there is no need for any further supplementation with vitamins or other food additives.    Whatever your food of choice may be - please be aware of the ingredients, as they are normally listed with the higher volume ingredients first.  A dachshund is a canine and carnivorous -it is more important that you see one or more of the protein sources listed first! 

It is our belief that wholesome grains (not by-products of grain) corn or corn by products (gluten meal) should not rank high on the ingredient list or be eliminated from the list entirely.  Variations of grain other than whole are labeled as meal or gluten.  Other fillers used in dog foods are beet pulp, and tomato pomace which are also filler, and should not rank toward the top of the list of ingredients on any dog food label. 

Good veggies or fruit for dogs are carrots, tomatoes, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries - but these are something nominal in their nutrition requirement. 

Treats to your puppy or adult should be done on a minimal basis or small bits if you are using a treat for training because they add calories to the daily intake.  It is difficult to reverse the effects of weight gain on dogs - feeding less of the regular food is better nutrition than feeding any diet labeled as "light".  If you read the label on "light" food - it contains more filler and lower protein which is not a well balanced diet for your pet.

Feeding Glucosamine - is sometimes beneficial for older pets that are showing signs of arthritis, but this ingredient is not beneficial for puppies or younger adults!  1/2 of a baby aspirin for adult Miniature Dachshunds can also be helpful for pain - if the pain seems to persist - see your vet for assistance in pain management.
